I figured the first short of the new year should be something truly special. For this reason, I'm pointing your direction to "Harvie Krumpet." Directed by Adam Elliot, the short won the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film in 2004. Narrated by Academy Award-winner Geoffrey Rush, the movie tells the story of a boy named Harvie Krumpet who seems to have all the worst luck in the world. In the 22-minute runtime, we follow Harvie from when he is a baby to when he is an old man. Indeed, his life is full of much unluck and even misery.
Yet the film is also funny and charming, with much to say about how we live our lives and spend our time. It is a reminder that life is a gift, no matter how unlucky we might be, there is something in life worth living for. While the short is available on DVD, it has also been released on YouTube to view for free (with ads; no ads if you have YouTube Premium). It should also be noted that if the animation looks familiar, it may be because Elliot's latest feature-length film - "Memoir of a Snail" - has been getting a lot of critical acclaim and is considered a potential contender in this year's Academy Awards to be nominated for Best Animated Feature Film, so Elliot may be up on stage collecting his second Oscar soon.
